Enchanting Pedagogy: Creating Labor Games in the Extractive University

Through ethnographic fieldwork as a Teaching Assistant (TA) at the University of California, Berkeley, I advance that pedagogical labor can be conceptualized two games. In didactic game, utilize hierarchical lecturing to simplify complex concepts in pursuit student comprehension material, while experiential game centers nonhierarchical dialogue and students’ personal experiences promote consciousness-raising. TAs’ ability create switch between games underpins my broader theorization one types: institutional – shared among workers similar structural circumstances persistent across worker entry exit innovation created by individual with relative autonomy amidst an absence co-presence. Just provide template for obscuring securing extraction surplus value under monopoly capitalism, do same increasingly flexible, autonomous capitalism twenty-first century.
